"A Day at Muscle Beach" is an episode from The All-New Popeye Hour's "The Adventures of Popeye" segment for Hanna-Barbera Productions in association with King Features Syndicate. It first aired on October 14, 1978 and was directed by George Gordon, Carl Urbano and Rudy Zamora. Popeye was voiced by Jack Mercer, Olive Oyl was voiced by Marilyn Schreffler and Bluto was voiced by Allan Melvin.
Plot[]
Popeye and Olive are out to have some fun in the sun at the beach where no weaklings are allowed, Muscle Beach. That is because the current Mr. Muscle Beach is none other than Bluto.
Popeye just finishes setting the beach blanket and picnic lunch when his royal highness comes strutting on the beach. He is followed by his adoring fans. Bluto does not waste any time to act out the part of beach bully. He starts by kicking up sand into Popeye's face.
Olive is also impressed with Bluto's role on the beach. She quickly drags Popeye over to watch him flex his muscles for the crowd. Popeye becomes jealous and starts flexing his muscles as well. Bluto takes this as a challenge and goes into beach bully part two. He starts flirting with Olive and throws Popeye into the ocean.
Part three of beach bully mode is the tough guy challenge. Bluto lifts a 300 pound barbell but Popeye bests him by lifting it with his big toe. Next, he lifts 800 pounds and Popeye lifts him and the 800 pounds with one hand. After that, Bluto catches a shark and throws it at Popeye, who scares the teeth out of it. Popeye shows honor by giving the teeth back to the shark.
The final part of the beach bully game is to get the girl. Bluto locks Popeye behind bars and chases Olive. She runs and builds a giant sand castle so she can hide in the tallest tower. When Bluto chases her around the top of the castle wall, she throws Popeye his spinach so he can save the day.
