Lifeguard Popeye

A lifeguard is an individual who supervises the safety and rescue of swimmers, surfers, and other water sports participants at a swimming pool, water park, or beach. Lifeguards are strong swimmers and trained in CPR/AED first aid, certified in water rescue using a variety of aids and equipment depending on requirements of their particular venue

Lifeguarding has been a somewhat recurring occupation within Popeye cartoons, where it is usually a position sought after by the main characters.

In Popeye cartoons[]

Popeye and Bluto compete for the titular job opening in the 1936 Fleischer cartoon I Wanna Be a Lifeguard. In 1950, Famous Studios released Beach Peach, where a blond muscleman lifeguard at a South Florida beach attempts to woo Olive Oyl away from Popeye. The 1960 Popeye the Sailor episode entitled "Popeye the Lifeguard" places Popeye in the role of a lifeguard, a position which makes him quite popular with the ladies, much to Olive Oyl's jealousy.
