Character history[]

Creation and development in Thimble Theatre[]

Mrs. Oxheart was created by E. C. Segar for the 1933 Thimble Theatre storyline "Popeye Fights Bullo Oxheart". In said strip, she aided her son in his match against Popeye by giving him tips as well as cheating.

Popeye's first movie[]

In the 1980 live-action film Popeye, Mrs. Oxheart and her son (here known as "Oxblood Oxheart") appear as secondary antagonists. She is portrayed by Linda Hunt. In the film, she is a resident of Sweethaven who is usually seen alongside her son, and she hosts a boxing match to prove Oxblood's might in town. If anyone could beat him, they would win a hefty sum of prize money and tax exemption. Castor Oyl sees this as an opportunity to earn some money for his now-poverty-stricken family, after Bluto and the Tax Collector cleaned them out. However, Castor stands no chance against the big palooka and his cunning mother and is easily defeated. Popeye then steps into the ring to avenge Castor. Seeing that the sailor is clearly physically superior, Mrs. Oxheart would serve as a human shield for her son whenever he was cornered, knowing that Popeye could not harm a woman. Despite their cheating ways, Popeye is able to come out on top when he accidentally causes Oxblood to knock out his own mother, giving Popeye all the freedom he needs to pummel the big palooka, thus defeating the Oxhearts and winning the money for the Oyls.
