Character history
Creation and development in Thimble Theatre
I. M. Shorty was created by Bud Sagendorf in 1948 for the fifth issue of the comic book Popeye. He was featured in the issue's second story, "Moon Goon!" or "Goon on the Moon!" or "The Man in the Moon Is a Goon!".
Biography
Professor Shorty and his partner Professor Biggy designed and built the first rocket ship to ever reach the Moon. Unfortunately, they did not design it to return. The rocket only had enough fuel to fly two hundred forty thousand miles to the Moon, but they never told the two astronauts, Popeye and Wimpy, about that fact.
He does not seem to have any morals, because he had no problem sending two men on a one-way mission to the Moon. He was not troubled by letting them believe that he would accompany them on that mission, and had no indication of compassion when he told Olive Oyl that Popeye would never return from the Moon.
Prof. Shorty appears to be the idea man of the scientific duo. He was the one who suggested that a seafarer would have the experience needed to complete a trip to the Moon as they are accustomed to travel. Letting Popeye and Wimpy make the tip alone seems to have been his idea, since Biggy had regrets about misleading them the way they did.
