"Off" was a kind of gruel that was served aboard the Josie Lee, the first ship Popeye ever sailed on. It was first mentioned in the promotional spots for Thimble Theatre called "Popeye's Life Story" from 1931, which explained the details of Popeye's past.


"Off" was the favorite dish among the crew of the Josie Lee and it could be made out of almost anything edible (or inedible). The dish was prepared by the ship's cook "The Ape", who frequently boasted that before becoming the ship's cook, he was a talented chef who could even make "Off" out of a bag of old silverware.
